Happy 119th Birthday, Albert Heim!

May 13 is the birthday of Albert Heim, a great South Amboyan who served in World War I, and as one of those “pillars of the community” people that we depend on. I have come to think of this date as Albert Heim Day. So far it’s a holiday known only to me, his family, and a few others. This post seeks to expand the circle.

Just one of the things we can be grateful to him for, Mr. Heim left behind an autobiography, which we have digitized and preserved in this great repository, the Internet. It’s an extraordinary story of immigration, the Great War, and a life well-lived, supplemented with relevant photos. Read his story at:

This document comes to us and has been promoted over the years by Frank Yusko, former history teacher at the former St. Mary High School. He took up the Immigrant Soldier story while at Spotswood High School and while Mr. Heim was still here to enjoy the experience.

There are a lot of great South Amboy residents who have done amazing things for this country, their family, their business, etc. Luckily this one left his story behind. You can read snippets (not necessarily all at once), and please sign the guest book and share any remembrances.

Let’s celebrate Albert Heim Day. It is the 119th anniversary, so happy birthday Mr. Heim.
